Peter of Bruys

Peter of Bruys
(d. c. 1140)
   Heretic and Sect Founder.
Peter is mentioned in the writings of abelard and peter the venerable. He had been a priest, but he seems to have rejected the authority of the Church, infant baptism, the necessity for formal church buildings, prayers for the dead and clerical celibacy. He preached doctrines throughout Provence and Dauphiné. His followers were known as the Petrobrusians and they were condemned at the Second Vatican Council of 1139. He himself seems to have been lynched by an infuriated mob. He disapproved of the veneration of the cross and, on one occasion near Nîmes, he built a huge fire to burn the offending articles. Instead, the crowd turned on him and threw him bodily into the flames.
